High-purity reference materials for accurate residue analysis in food and environmental samples.
Chlorobenzilate, also known as Ethyl bis(4-chlorophenyl)hydroxyacetate, is a pesticide that was originally developed by Ciba-Geigy and introduced in 1952. It is a non-systemic pesticide that works through contact and as a neurotoxin, disrupting the functioning of the nervous system. In its pure state, chlorobenzilate is a colorless to pale yellow solid, but the commercial product is a brownish liquid.
CAS Number: 510-15-6
Chemical Formula: C16H14Cl2O3
Molar Mass: 325.19 g/mol
Melting Point: 37°C
Chlorobenzilate was primarily used as an acaricide against mites on citrus trees, including deciduous fruit trees. However, its use has been discontinued in many regions due to health and environmental concerns.
Chlorobenzilate is not currently used in the United States or Europe. After carcinogenicity was established in mice, its use was banned in the United States in 1979, except for citrus cultivation, and completely banned after 1999. In the European Union, its use is also currently banned. International trade in chlorobenzilate is regulated by the Rotterdam Convention.
Chlorobenzilate has been detected as a residue on tomatoes found in Japanese markets in 2005. Laboratories conducting food and environmental analysis must ensure compliance with regulatory limits by using high-purity reference materials.
There is no data on the carcinogenic effects of chlorobenzilate in humans. However, carcinogenic effects were observed in mice when administered orally. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has classified chlorobenzilate as a probable human carcinogen (Group B2). The International Agency for Research on Cancer has concluded that there is insufficient information available to evaluate the carcinogenicity of chlorobenzilate in humans.
Chlorobenzilate is a persistent organic pollutant and is very toxic to aquatic invertebrates. Its environmental persistence raises concerns about long-term ecological impacts.
Due to its toxicity, appropriate safety measures must be taken when handling chlorobenzilate. It is important to follow precautionary statements such as P264 (Wash hands thoroughly after handling), P270 (Do not eat, drink, or smoke when using this product), P273 (Avoid release to the environment), and others listed under GHS labelling.
HPC Standards GmbH provides high-purity reference materials for chlorobenzilate, ensuring accurate and reliable residue analysis. Our products are tested according to international quality requirements and meet the highest industrial standards. These reference materials are essential for laboratories conducting food and environmental analysis to ensure compliance with regulatory limits.
