High-purity reference materials for accurate and reliable residue analysis in food and environmental samples.
Diquat dibromide (IUPAC name: 6,7-dihydrodipyrido[1,2-a:2′,1′-c]pyrazine-5,8-diium dibromide) is a contact herbicide used for desiccation and defoliation. It is available as a salt with counterions such as bromide or chloride.
Diquat dibromide is primarily used in agriculture for pre-harvest desiccation of crops like potatoes, oilseeds, and certain vegetables. It is also used to control invasive aquatic vegetation.
In the United States, Diquat dibromide is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) and the Food Quality Protection Act (FQPA). It is no longer approved for use in the European Union as of October 12, 2018.
Monitoring programs ensure that pesticide residues in food are below the limits set by regulatory authorities like the European Food Safety Authority.
Diquat dibromide is moderately toxic and can be harmful if swallowed, inhaled, or absorbed through the skin. The World Health Organization (WHO) has set an acceptable daily intake of 0-0.006 mg/kg body weight per day.
Diquat bonds strongly to soil and water particles, remaining without significant degradation for years. However, when bound to clays, it is biologically inactive at typical agricultural concentrations.
First aid measures and safety instructions are provided on the product label, which is legally binding and must be followed to minimize risks to human health and the environment.
All pesticides, including Diquat dibromide, must be registered with appropriate authorities in the country of use. In the EU, a two-tiered approach is used for approval and authorization.
HPC Standards GmbH provides high-purity reference materials for Diquat dibromide, ensuring accurate and reliable residue analysis in compliance with international quality requirements and industrial standards.
