Overview

Mirex is an organochloride that was commercialized as an insecticide and later banned due to its environmental impact. It is a white crystalline odorless solid, a derivative of cyclopentadiene, known for its chemical robustness and lipophilicity, making it a bioaccumulative pollutant.

Uses

Initially, Mirex was used to control fire ants in the Southeastern United States. It was applied in the form of bait, mixed with soybean oil and corncob grits, and delivered by aircraft, helicopter, or tractor. Its use as a pesticide was banned in 1978.

Regulatory

The United States Environmental Protection Agency prohibited the use of Mirex in 1976. It is also banned by the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, which lists it among the
